Litter Pearls FAQs
Wow! How did we do that?
Each Litter Pearl in our bag has thousands of pores and channels making it super absorbent. Upon contact with liquid of any kind, the Litter Pearls begin to immediately absorb the moisture into the pearls. The moisture and related odor are locked inside leaving the outer layer of the pearls dry to the touch. The moisture will evaporate, but odor causing solids will be trapped inside. Once the Litter Pearls dry they are ready to absorb over and over again.
How long will a bag of Litter Pearls last?
3.5 lb bag of Litter Pearls will last one cat approximately one month if proper steps are followed. It is important that feces are removed daily and that the pearls are stirred (raked) thoroughly daily pulling the pearls on the bottom to the surface to aid in the evaporation of the liquid they have absorbed. If you have more than one cat using the litter box, the length of time the litter will perform is directly related to the number of cats. A 3.5 lb bag will last two cats approximately 15 days and three cats for 10 days.
Does it Clump or Gel?
No! The Litter Pearls stay dry. They do not clump, do not dissolve, do not turn to gel, nor do they change size or shape. With that, you are not scooping out heavy clumps of liquid waste daily.
What about Odor?
Odor is immediately locked inside the Litter Pearls as liquid is totally absorbed. The moisture associated with urine will be evaporated off of the litter within a couple of hours of contact. During this process, the odors remain locked inside the porous channels of the pearls. After a period of approximately 30 days they become full of the solid molecules (odor) and will require disposal and replacement with fresh Litter Pearls.
What’s this stuff made of?
Silica sand, water and oxygen- 100%. There are no fillers in this product. Please do not confuse this type of silica gel litter with crystalline silica! There is no crystalline silica in this product. Our manufacturing process is non-toxic and creates silica that is 100% safe for pets and people, even if consumed in small quantities. This is the only product of its type approved by the FDA for use around food.
What happens if it is ingested?
This product is 100% biologically and chemically inert. What does that mean to you and your pets? There is nothing in there that will hurt you or your pets. There are absolutely no chemicals and it will pass through the digestive system. We do recommend that if your pet should swallow any Litter Pearls that you give them plenty of water to drink and monitor their behavior. Since Litter Pearls are a desiccant (absorb liquids) it important your pet gets plenty of fluids to saturate the pearls and allow them to pass through the digestive system
What about Kittens?
Warning: Litter Pearls should only be used for kittens over 12 weeks of age, starting with a layer of 2 cm (approximately 2/3 an inch deep). The depth can be increased as the cats gain height and body mass.
How do you dispose of used Litter Pearls?
You can either put it in your flowerbed, compost pile, or throw it in the trash. It is completely safe at landfills, as it decomposes back to its sand form over a period of time. You will notice that a few of the pearls will be stuck to the solid waste when scooping and if you prefer, you may flush a few of them with that solid waste.
What about Dust?
There may appear to be a small amount of powder on the product. This is not a chemical but the result of pearls rubbing together during shipping. And it is also NOT a silica dust; commonly associated with some clay litters(Crystaline Silica with a form of quartz). The dust will be virtually non-existent with this product as you are removing the solid waste or changing the box.
Proper Filling of Litter Boxes?
THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE to product performance is perhaps the appropriate fill line. This product does not work better if more is added, but works less than acceptable if there is not enough litter in the box. Litter Pearls should fill to 1.5”-2” in the bottom of the cat box and one bag is suitable for a medium size litter box. Customers can either use 1 ½ bags for larger boxes or purchase the economy size bag.
Does it track outside the Litter Box?
The size of the Litter Pearl helps to inhibit the pearl from becoming lodged in the paws or fur of the cat’s feet. However, most cat litter is “kicked” out of the box when burying feces or dragged out when jumping out of the box. The product is lightweight and may find its way out of the box but a covered litter box or one with high sides along with a deep mat at all openings will go a long way to reducing any tracking issues. We also have the “track-Less” Litter Pearls and Micro-Crystals which are a shape that will control tracking when the litter box is on a hardwood or tile floor.
What about the Feces?
The feces must be removed daily as it does not disappear. Using our specially designed Litter Scoop will let the pearls fall back into the box, unlike traditional slotted spoons. A small amount, perhaps 5-10 beads may adhere to the feces and will be removed when the feces is removed, but will not have a detrimental effect on the month long performance of the litter. While the feces are in the box, it will generally be buried. When buried, feces will dry out quickly as the pearls absorb the moisture. If resting on top, the Pearls will work to “wick” out moisture lingering around the feces. Both of these two dynamics will have a significant effect on the controlling the odor associated with the feces.
What about Diarrhea?
The beads will work to dry the wet stool. This will result in more than the average number of pearls being removed from the box with the wet stool. The stool will dry eventually but have some residual moisture and should be removed immediately form the box.
What about Cat Acceptance?
As with any new cat litter it is very important to introduce it gradually. Cats are not usually excited about constant litter changes so whenever introducing any new cat litter it is recommended that you incorporate some portion of the old litter to encourage cat’s trial. It may even be best to incorporate some clumps of waste or used litter from the currently used box. You may find a 50/50 mix best for the first month, but should allow Litter Pearls to be the sole litter in the box from that point on with complete cat acceptance. You may also find it helpful to place the cat in the box after changing to pearls and comfort them into trying the texture and sound. Litter Pearls may be a bit crunchier than clay and a bit strange at first. We have not experienced cats refusing to use this product.
About Silica Gel
DO NOT CONFUSE OUR SILICA GEL CAT LITTER PRODUCT for CRYSTALLINE SILICA. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. SILICA SAND HAS NO ADVERSE EFFECTS OR CAUTIONS. Crystalline silica is an ingredient commonly found in cements, clays and clumping type products. Some Crystalline silica, once airborne, shows the ability of causing Silicosis. This can cause incurable lesions on the lungs and throat rendering that tissue useless for transferring oxygen. Crystalline Silica is a naturally occurring element also known as Quartz, and found in some of the clay litters, however Litter Pearls and other silica gel litters are 100% FREE OF CRYSTALLINE SILICA.
